« To treat a disease, we must first understand it. My work recreates the psychosomatic symptoms and emotional toll of mental illness and psychological trauma through the investigation of form, scale, and weight on the body. The cold, dark, and unyielding density of the steel’s fire-scaled surface calls to a burdensome presence within the mind. When translated into a jewelry form, this work reveals an inner strife through the physical discomfort of the wearer. In turn, this creates an empathetic recognition within the viewer who witnesses this struggle. This somber act of attempting to carry the oppressive embodiment of trauma from our past, speaks to the emotional baggage we all carry. From an empathetic understanding, one can learn how to alleviate the pain and find personal growth from this difficult experience. The process of cathartically expelling long withheld pain and turmoil through creating representations, strengthens one’s resolve and opens up the void for endless potential. » John Sullivan
