Promoting Contemporary Art Jewelry since 2009

The Munich Jewelry Week 2018 is about to start with more than one hundred exhibitions and parallel events (lectures, fair, etc…) all across the city. For me, and I suppose for some of you too, it will not be easy to make the right choice, especially if we have a short stay in the Bavarian capital. Official program in hands, not obvious to guess the best exhibitions to see. Here below our selection, from confirmed artists to new talents. Enjoy !

I Believe … will self-assemble and dismantle to change location, reassembling across Munich during 6 – 12 March 2018. This exhibition will appear on the peripheries of the Pinakothek der Moderne, Academy of Fine Arts, Kunstpavillon, Lost Weekend Café and Marienplatz.

Royal College of Art student collective to exhibit at Munich Jewellery Week 2018 A group of Royal College of Art students will display their work in a rare and roving jewellery and object exhibition during Munich Jewellery Week from 8 – 11 March 2018.
The 20 Master’s students have been studying the Royal College of Art’s (RCA) renowned Jewellery & Metal programme which is distinguished by its experimental approach to exploring jewellery and object forms, and the diversity of its students’ creations. These students, many of them international artists and designers, have formed a collective known as ‘JAM’ standing for jewellery and metal. The collective aims to challenge commonly held beliefs of culture, identity and the human condition through their work and this will be reflected in the I Believe … exhibition. The exhibition will be a guerilla-style installation where the students will display 20 mini-exhibition cases of experimental work that will travel the streets of Munich. These portable cases will intercept pedestrian traffic and present artworks to curious passers-by with the aim of introducing JAM’s ideas to a wider audience.

In the middle of nature, shielded from distractions and external stimuli they have been concentrated exclusively on art, jewellery, gemstones and their topics. They reflected, exchanged and they developed further their profiles. The conglomeration has been heated up: time to have a closer look at the outcomes of BIG BANG!

Yael Friedman, a contemporary jeweler, connects the world of toys and jewelry in a series of works that emerge from research on puzzles. Through multiple creative processes – working with 3D printing techniques to create limited editions and one-of-a-kind pieces – she explores the boundaries of Playful Jewelry. Her creations call to be moved, played with, and manipulated, sparking unexpected interactions and dialog between the ornament and its wearer.

The City, the environment and the surrounding landscape in which one lives, inevitably affects our doing and being. Architecture, urbanity, green space, colours, sounds, smells, neighborhood, open spaces, quality of life, mentality, politics, social and societal developments, old and new, climate and tradition, all modify and characterize the city and the lifestyle in it. The work by the artist living and working in the city, whether born or relocated there, can be influenced by his environment, consciously or unconsciously. Inspirations and ideas are reinterpreted through the election of form, color, material and chosen techniques. The current work of the participating artists, each from geographically, structurally and scenically different large or small cities, reflects these varying conditions. 7 Countries, 12 Cities, 12 Artists. 17H, Neureutherstraße 26
New Work by the JV Collective, Melanie Bilenker, Leslie Boyd, Sarah Rachel Brown, Emily Cobb, Maria Eife & Mallory Weston – Neureutherstraße 26, 80799 Munich – 07/03-09/03 11:30-18:30, 10/03 11:30-15:30 – Op 07/03 17-21h – JVcollectivestudio@gmail.com, https://jv-collective.com/ – »**

To tempt, to seduce, to bewitch, to entrap, to wink, to flash, to caution, to scream. The duality of Sirens conjures vivid images that can be linked to the powerful capabilities of jewelry. Sirens is a collection of new work from the JV Collective, a group of six female artists based in Philadelphia. Our group creates a diverse range of work which becomes unified and connected through the dual nature and concept of the siren. A spectrum of work that portrays surreal creatures which create their own mythology and works that seduce through their compelling use of line, texture, or sensual materials. Conversely, we create works that shout and signal in vibrant colors using bold graphic imagery or works that alert and call attention to inequity and prejudice. But perhaps the image of a siren as a powerful woman speaks to our work the most, as we explore the nature of femininity, feminism, and the female form.

Why am I so good? We ask ourselves and don’t know the answer. The reason is: If we find out the answer, we are not good anymore. The blindness of the observer is the pivotal point in the logic of good and bad. The works in the exhibition “why am I so good?” try to ask the question, from this blind point of view, not from above. They reveal, from the inside, something about our self-admiration and admiration of others. The exhibition combines jewelry, installation and object.

Biophilia – “Biophilia is the passionate love for life and all living things; it is the desire to promote growth, wheather it be a human, a plant, an idea, or a social group. » Erich Fromm. Jewellery as a medium celebrates the love of man. It examines his characteristics and limits. It embodies his ideas, materializes his thoughts and symbolizes his will. The biological impuls to protect and preserve the living, to present it in a symbol. It takes inspiration from nature, whether it wants to show the inner structure or the outher form.

CHAOS – « Chaos is a beautiful thing. The aesthetic of chaos can be seen in mathematics, in statistics, in philosophy, in politics, in anarchy, in geology, and in most aspects of our lives. Moving together with chaos, not eliminating it, can create spontaneity and surprise. Predicting chaos and celebrating it can lead us on a journey on new roads. » Izabella Petrut. The Dialogue Collective are a group of makers whose remit is to discus, explore and develop new approaches to design; fabricating; curating and showing jewellery and silversmithing as a collaborative process. They constantly produce and show beautiful work in thought provoking environments. Of no fixed abode, borderless and rootless, Temporaria is a tumbleweed micro-nation without political alignment. Looking neither left nor right, looking neither backwards nor inwards and especially not down the nose, the international jewellers of Dialogue Collective have decreed that other views and directions are required. In Temporaria citizens and tourists alike are encouraged to look forward, upward and outward with peculiar intensity in order to look at the overlooked, to see the previously unseen and to cross previously inaccessible borders. To that end, Dialogue Collective invites you to visit the inaugural pop-up Embassy of Temporaria, to marvel at the state jewels, to revel in the slightly ridiculous and meander through the metaphysical. Relish the respite from florid faced, strangely coiffed, pointy-shoed, brazenly bumptious, paralysed politicians whilst engaging with the Dialogue Collective’s response to EXIT.

London based punk group Scrotum Clamp are back for Munich Jewellery Week. Icons of the contemporary jewellery scene, the Clamp marry cutting-edge jewellery design with environmental awareness and a keen sense of iconoclastic ‘art brut’ irreverence. They recently ignited a symposium in Trondheim, Norway, entitled “Crafting Dystopia and Utopia: The Future of Crafts in Museums”, organised by the Norwegian Crafts Council, with a performative seminar followed by a post-seminar gig. March will see them at their customary slot in Munich, performing at Europe’s largest jewellery festival ‘Schmuck’ and exhibiting with visionary art jewellery designers, “The Dialogue Collective”.
